The Dark Skies Above Us

Interview with Iskra

Today we are interviewing the blackened crust/anarchist black metal pioneers Iskra and we are so fucking excited about it. We, the blog editors, would like to thank comrades for answering to our call. In black we fucking crust! Enjoy!

The interview in English:

TDSAU: You guys are one of the pioneer bands which first mixed black metal with crust. Was that a decision you made at a certain point or did it come to you naturally while creating your music?
Which metal bands, black metal or other, do you concider your influences?

Iskra: It was a decision made back in 1996 when members of Black Kronstadt began listening to Black Metal. Iskra started immediately following the demise of Black Kronstadt; much of the 1st lp was actually written in 1997, but, due to health problems, the band was put on hold. The project was re-initiated in 2002.

The band listens to a lot of metal, to much to list. But, early on, say in 1996, the first Black Metal bands we listened to were Bathory, Hellhammer, and then the so-called “2nd wave” with bands like Marduk, Morbid, Emperor, Satyricon, Immortal, Gorgoroth and Mayhem. Burzum never appealed to us, since it is very low grade musically, as well as pro-Fascist, and nationalist. But Black Metal is not all we listen to. We also like Thrash, Grind and Death Metal. Bands like Merciless, Possessed, Sarcophago, early Messiah, Sex Trash, early Sinister, Nuclear Death, the Terrorizer record,  early Napalm Death, and Carcass etc.

TDSAU: You call yourselves an Anarchist band. What does that mean to you?

Iskra: It means we are Anarchists who play music. We use our power as a band of musicians to promote Anarchist thought, action, and history. It meands that we will aid and abet Anarchist projects, to the best of our abilities, as independant cultural workers. It means that our band will not compromisethe original intentions of the Anarchist DIY protocol, as practiced by the Anarchist punk pioneers.

As Anarchists, we do not follow any one theory. We think that practice evolves out of each discrete situation. Although very critical of North American Anarchist trends, we support the movement in all of its diversity and tactics, but do not adhere to any single theory. It seems that many Anarchists still need to understand that every situation will require specific actions; actions that are dependent upon what needs to be accomplished in the moment. Grand theories will not work.

We are anti-fascist, and therefore anti-nationalist. We recognize peoples, groups of people, but not nation-states.

TDSAU: I personally believe that revolution is also a matter of culture. Where do you stand on that? Do you think that black metal can contribute into building a culture which stands against capitalism and power?

Iskra: We think that culture is a very powerful force, which should be respected by any one who wishes to make serious changes within the current structures of organization. Without culture, politics has little meaning.

Currently, Black Metal, it would seem, is dominated by neo-fascist nationalists, as well as musical groups whose main focus is commercial viability. The seeds of nationalistic neo-fascism can be found within the so-called “2nd wave” of Black Metal, which started around 1986 with Mayhem. Certain members of the late 80's /early90's BM bands were homophobic, nationalist, ignorant, and violent(although the violence was sensationalized dramatically by the press, and exploited by certain bands). At the same time, this BM movement proposed a shift from commercial and corporate control of their music. They also were opposed to the status quo, and the church, supporting the power of the individual over state control. There were queer people involved from the beginning, as has always been the case with metal. So, there was a constellation of things going on. Add to this that most of the members of this movement were very young, so things were not as thought out. It was more of an angry reaction.

We think these people were confused, unsure of their own minds, and misguided, and controlled by the very powers they claimed to oppose. Many of these bands have changed dramatically over time. Now you have Dark Throne talking about Amebix, whereas in 1993 they were playing what they called “true aryan black metal.” Also you have Gaul, formerly from Gorgoroth, being openly queer. So, some things have changed, but, unfortunately, this old BM has become a mass commodity with little or no meaning beyond the aesthetics, which is unfortunate because the music is still very powerful. These groups act, in interviews and such, as if we don't understand them, but, unfortunately, they are to easy to understand. Their project is to simple. It lacks the depth necessary to inspire, and invite real change, which makes one wonder if they want change at all. Perhaps these bands are comfortable now that they only play large festivals for, more or less, an a-political, status quo. People who want an image, not critical thought.

And, unfortunately BM is being used to support nationalist movements in the Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria etc. These are neo-facsist in practice and language. Supremacist, and occult bullshit lyrics are also being used to promote neo-fascist, and white suppremacist groups all around the world. As government and captitalism moves closer to out right fascism, it makes sense that more of these bands will crop up. They are a representation of the status quo, in fact.

Black Metal has proved itself to be a powerful and diverse movement with many different ideas. Unfortunately most of these ideas are in support, whether they know it or not, of the status quo, and political stratagies. Is there a possibility of its members coming to realize that they are being controlled by nation, corporation, and religion? Will they one day fight with the Anarchists in support of a freedom that is real? We think its possible, but there will have to be more critical thinking within that scene, and more BM bands willing to take on the complexity of global politics in order to understand their role within these structures. The benefit for bands that do become, in some ways, anti-nationalist(rather than nationalist)is that they can, in some way, connect with people from different parts of the world and, if they do so, will find that we are all being controlled by capitalist minded politicians.

Once this is understood, we can unite against them, culturally(for our part), and possibly even on a political level. Not in the usual sense of course, we mean that we would decide for ourselves how we want to organize and live our lives. Then we can wage cultural war for what WE want, not what polticians want. A recent example of politicians using nationalist pride to their own ends is the Yugoslavian so-called “civil war” in the 1990s. In that situation you had people, who had previously lived together for a long period of time, killing each-other due to manipuation by politicians from Britain, Germany, and the U.S.A. Who, like the Nazis in the 1940s, sought to break the country for political goals(occupation, strategic position, justification of NATO etc). Such a tragic event, which is easily avoidable when people understand who is really making the descisions, and why.

Its also important to point out that the expression “ethnic cleansing,” thrown about so liberally within the western media at the time, in order to create racist fervor against the Serbs, was invented by western journalists and picked up by politicians for speeches and what not. The unfortunate irony being that it was in fact those very same politicians who were comitting, and inciting, mass murder.

TDSAU: Black metal in Greece is concidered fascist and comercialised.Based on your experience what do you think anarchists who listen to this kind of music should do, to fight this prejudice?

Iskra: See answer to question 3 for partial answer.

There are many Anarchists who listen to Black Metal, but few who play it. So, to answer your question, we think that more Anarchists, who play music, and love the sound of BM, can play within the style. This way we can bring real radicalism, and change the course of that music's history. For those Anarchists that love BM, but not the ideas associated with it, we suggest exposing the fascism, and opposing it publically so that the music, and ideas, are not stigmatized. We can take the power away by ridiculing their back ward ideas, and silly commercial marketing thus making fun of the stupidity and ignorance of these bands. If there is a nationalist, and or fascist band, performing in your area, it should be opposed. Note that this is not censorship, this a action against. We don't want censorship, we want understanding and opposition. These things are different.

TDSAU: Since 2009 Iskra has a female vocalist, something which is quite rare both in extreme metal and crust or punk. How is this working out for you? Is extreme metal a "man's music" as many idiots claim?

Iskra: Actually, over the course of time, there has been three women vocalists in the band. Mel,Megan, amd Danni. Mel sang in 2004/5 and can be heard doing double vocals with Scott on our “Terrorist Act” EP, and the split EP with Self Rule. Megan was not recorded, but did the first European tour with the band in 2005.

Danielle, our present vocalist, has been doing active with our graphic art, and some of our song supporting write ups, since 2005, so, although not appearing as a vocalist, has been working with the group since then.

How is this working for us? Very well. Extreme metal is certainly dominated by men, but that fact will be crushed as more women become involved. Unfortunately, the involvment, and image, of female musicians in the mainstream, and largely in the underground as well, is driven by male fantasy, treating women as sex objects for marketing.

TDSAU: I believe you know how fucked up things are in Greece nowdays. What about Canada? How are things there? Is there an anarchist movement in Canada? Does it react good with the anarchist metal scene?

Iskra: We know something about Greece. The rising nationalism, and neo fascism (the “Golden Dawn” and such). Politics are corrupt, like here, but the reaction is more extreme, or so it seems, in Greece.

We've spoken a little of Canada earlier. It is not a people, like the Greek people. But of course there are many different peoples in Greece, there is no “purity” as some would suggest. Clear cut national identity doesn't exist. Politicians and state theorists would have us believe there are these clear differentiations. Such divisions are created by politicians in order to control and manipulate large groups of people. So,  within this construction of “nation,” one imagines a sense of belonging.This nationalism is supported by flags, cheavanism, jingoism, militaristic state thinking, sports teams etc.

Canada is a mix of colonizers. Like all nation states Canada is a deception. A deception that facilitates the use of geo-power, and bio-power. i.e. control of space, and people. We do not feel that this is our place, our country, because it is not. Unlike many people, we do not have a sense of belonging. As Anarchists, we consider ourselves to be a kind of flowing people who belong to an idea, and to each other, rather than a specific place. In thinking this way we can minimize manipulation by politics, especially the politics of nationalism.

Yes, there is an Anarchist movement in Canada, but the people are not rooted. They tend to roam about. Some Anarchist lay roots in rural areas, but, in the cities there is to much police control. Squats, for example, and not tolerated in Canada. If squats exist, which of course they do, they are kept “quiet,” and will have a small number of people. Public squats are brutally attacked and infiltrated, so Anarchists have to be more innovative when taking space.

Besides Iskra, there is no Anarchist metal scene here. The punks, generally, are not very serious about radical politics. Most punks here would not call themselves “Anarchists,” preferring to find the next party rather than take any stand. Still, there is stuff going on, and some punks are involved. We do our own projects outside of the punk, and Anarchist, scenes, preferring to work on the periphery so as to not be easily monitered, and to avoid the usual drama of working to close with people. We do hope to help create an Anarchist metal scene, however.

Our band does not associate with the metal scene here at all. We do have metal fans, and we do talk with metal heads, pretty much every day, but the bands, and the scene, which exists only in clubs and bars, is political only so far as it supports their wish to “make it” in the mainstream. The underground metal scene is, more or less, filled with phonies and violent, coke snorting, assholes.

So far as we know, we are the only metal band in the area to identify with Anarchism. But all of this could change tomorrow. We do think that metal can be very powerful if there is more thought put into the lyrical ideas. The old thrash metal, and much of the South American scene, did have interesting lyrics, probably due to the time and the brutal politics of thier situations, so there is a precedent. It seems that Death Metal derailed the rebellion of early metal, turning it into a phony image that cared only for a party, money, and fame, all of which has become boring and repetitive. As times change, people will have to get more serious, and so will the music.

TDSAU: It has been some time since we listened to something new from the band. What are your plans for the future? Any releases or tours planned? Thank you for your time, hope to see you in Greece soon!

Iskra: We've released a couple things within the last year. A split with Doom Siren from Texas, and our “European Demo” LP, both self released. Right now we are working on a new full length, wich we'll hopefully have out by summer.
We are coming to Greece this summer, on July 27th,  to play the “Arm Your Desires” festival. We are very excited about this, since we've been trying to get to Greece for some time.
This July and August, we are touring East Europe: Czech, Croatia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Romania, Hungary, Turkey etc.

TDSAU: Είστε μια από τις πρώτες μπάντες που έπαιξαν ένα μείγμα black metal και crust. Πρόκειται για μια απόφαση που πήρατε κάποια δεδομένη στιγμή ή σας ήρθε φυσικά, φτιάχνοντας μουσική; Ποιες metal μπάντες, black metal ή άλλες, σας επηρέασαν μουσικά;

TDSAU: Προσωπικά πιστεύω πως η επανάσταση είναι και θέμα κουλτούρας, Τι νομίζεται γι'αυτό; Πιστεύετε πως το black metal θα μπορούσε να συνεισφέρει στη δημιουργία μιας αντικαπιταλιστικής και αντικρατικής κουλτούρας;

TDSAU: Στην Ελλάδα το black metal θεωρείται φασιστικό και εμπορευματοποιημένο. Με βάση την εμπειρία σας, τι θα μπορούσαν να κάνουν οι αναρχικοί που γουστάρουν αυτή τη μουσική για να πολεμήσουν αυτήν την προκατάληψη;

TDSAU: Από το 2009, οι Iskra έχουν γυναίκα στα φωνητικά, πράγμα που είναι αρκετά σπάνιο τόσο για το ακραίο metal και το crust όσο και για το punk. Πως λειτουργεί αυτό σε σας; Είναι το ακραίο metal "ανδρική μουσική" όπως υποστηρίζουν πολλοί μαλάκες;

TDSAU: Πιστεύω ξέρετε πόσο σκατά είναι η κατάσταση στην Ελλάδα αυτήν την περίοδο. Πως είναι τα πράγματα στον Καναδά; Υπάρχει εκεί αναρχικό κίνημα; Υπάρχει θετική διάδραση με την τοπική metal σκηνή;

TDSAU: Έχει περάσει καιρός από τότε που ακούσαμε κάτι καινούριο από τη μπάντα. Ποια είναι τα σχέδια σας για το μέλλον: Έχετε στα σκαριά κάποια κυκλοφορία ή περιοδεία;

  1. Thanks. I'm a huge fan of Iskra and what they do. I have read previous interviews with them and it is always interesting what they say. Not only are they a rare Anarchist black metal band but some of the most serious anarchist musicians around.
